Network And Communication Protocol

Definition: A network protocol defines a “language” of rules and conventions for communication between network devices. A protocol includes formatting rules that specify how data is packaged into messages. It also may include conventions like message acknowledgement or data compression to support reliable and/or high-performance network communication.

Client/Server

The client server model uses a central computer, fileserver, main frame, or master node, that serves files to the clients/nodes. Fileservers are computers whose only function in life is to serve the clients/nodes.

No one actually sits down at the fileserver to do his or her daily work. The application programs loaded on the fileserver are accessed from one of the clients and not directly at the fileserver.

Networking hardware

Networking hardware typically refers to equipment facilitating the use of a computer network. Typically, this includes routers, switches, access points, network interface cards and other related hardware.

The most common kind of networking hardware today is copper-based Ethernet adapters, helped largely by its standard inclusion on most modern computer systems. Wireless networking has become increasingly popular, however, especially for portable and handheld devices.

Other hardware prevalent within computer networking is datacenter equipment (such as file servers, database servers and storage areas), network services (such as DNS, DHCP, email etc) as well as other specific network devices such as content delivery.

Other diverse devices which may be considered Networking hardware include mobile phones, PDAs and even modern coffee machines. As technology grows and IP-based networks are integrated into building infrastructure and household utilities, network hardware becomes an ambiguous statement owing to the increasing number of ‘network capable’ endpoints.

Network Topologies

Topology:  The physical and/or electrical configuration of cabling and connections comprising a network — the shape of the system.

Topology Types

Every network has a “shape” which is normally refered to as its topology. There are five major topologies in use today: Bus, Ring, Star, Tree, and Mesh. Each is used for specific network types, although some network types can use more than one topology. For example, Ethernet networks can be laid out in a Bus, Star, or Tree topology, or any combination of the three. Token ring is physically laid out in a Star, but electrically behaves like a Ring. To properly understand each network type requrires first understanding the basic topologies.

Types of Networking

LAN, WAN and Other Area Networks

One way to categorize the different types of computer network designs is by their scope or scale. For historical reasons, the networking industry refers to nearly every type of design as some kind of area network. Common examples of area network types are:

• LAN – Local Area Network
• WLAN – Wireless Local Area Network
• WAN – Wide Area Network
• MAN – Metropolitan Area Network
• SAN – Storage Area Network, System Area Network, Server Area Network, or sometimes Small Area Network
• CAN – Campus Area Network, Controller Area Network, or sometimes Cluster Area Network
• PAN – Personal Area Network
• DAN – Desk Area Network
